<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of dispersing replacement time of a plurality of lamps under simultaneous lighting control. <P>SOLUTION: A projection type display device comprises: a light source unit 210 including four lamps 211a, 211b, 211c, 211d; liquid crystal panels 230, 240, 250 which modulate an incident light from the light source unit 210; time counters 404, 405, 406, 407 which measure a cumulative time during which each lamp is lighted; and a controlling unit 401 which performs control for recommending lamp replacement when each lamp, which has its own cumulative lighting time, reaches its own controlling lifetime which is set for each of the lamps and is different in each of the lamps. The controlling unit 401 is configured not to light each lamp as the control for recommending lamp replacement.
