<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain cost reduction and compactness of a friction damper. <P>SOLUTION: In the friction damper 10a, relative movement is suppressed by frictional force of pressure contact plates disposed between a pair of members 51 and 52 relatively moved in a prescribed direction and sliding accompanying the relative movement. Sliding in the prescribed direction of a second pressure contact plate 21 to first pressure contact plates 11 and 11a is permitted by a first through hole 13 and when third pressure contact plates 31 and 31a are slid in a prescribed direction to the first pressure contact plates 11 and 11a linked with sliding, force for sliding is transmitted from the second pressure contact plate 21 to the third pressure contact plates 31 and 31a via engagement of a second through hole 23 and a third through hole 33 with a bolt member 41b.
