The method involves determining functional state of a temperature control system based on heat balance of a battery management system and measured temperature for each of modules of the battery management system. Countermeasures are triggered when malfunction of the battery management system is determined, where the countermeasures comprise an output of a warning message and/or disconnection of the battery management system from a mains system. The temperature of cooling fluid of the temperature control system is determined upon entry into the battery management system. An independent claim is also included for a battery management system.
