A slagging gasifier, having a burner within a sleeve 27 for maintaining slag flow through the outlet 21, comprises a cylindrical body 1 surmounted by a charging dome 2. The upper part of the body 1 has a metal clad refractory lining 8, a charge directing sleeve 60 and a gas off-take 4. The combustion chamber of the gasifier has a refractory coated inner shell 6 spaced from the body 1 to leave a water space 9, which is closed at the bottom by a plate 17 connecting a tube 16 depending from the bottom plate 10 of the hearth with the body 1. Cooling coils 29, 28, 31, 32 in the refractory burner sleeve 27, and in the lining of the combustion chamber have inlet pipes extending through a chamber 33 in the part of the body 1 below the hearth. Cooling coils 28 in the refractory hearth discharge into the interior of the tube 16, the wall cooling coils 31, 32 discharge into lower part of the crater jacket between the tube 16 and body 1, and cooling water from the tuyere jackets is discharged into the tuyere insertion boxes 12. Pipes 44 extending to the top of the water jacket 9 discharge the cooling water through connections 46 first below the tuyere level. The lower part of the body 1 containing a slag receptacle 48 and a frit draw-off pipe 52, 52a is supplied with water through a pipe 51 discharging downwardly into the container 48 to agitate the frit. A water level indicator 53 <PICT:0977122/C4-C5/1> is connected between the level of the pipe outlet box 33 and the tube 16, the upper tube 55 passing into the tube 16 through the housing 56 of a sight glass for observing the flow of slag. The outlet pipes 46 from the water jacket 9 lead into the bottom of a tube 57 having an outlet 59 to the water filled bottom part of the body 1. The tube 57 forms a stem supporting the slag receptacle 48, from which large lumps of slag may be withdrawn through a lock hopper (not shown). The lower part of the gasifier may be purged through a pipe 66, and a sampling probe 62 may be inserted through the charging dome 2, which may have a radioactive detector to regulate or indicate the necessity of charging. The water pressure in the cooling tubes and water jackets is maintained at a level suitable to the operating pressure of the gasifier. Hot gases from the burner not only maintain freedom of slag flow through the tap hole 21, but also the freedom of slag flow in the race way below the tuyeres, and prevents solid fuel passing out of the tap hole 21. The burner may be used to start the gasifier from cold, and frit withdrawn from the container 48 may be recirculated to maintain a suitable slag flow from the gasifier. A pyrometer (not shown) may be located at the outer end of a quartz rod extending through a tuyere and acting as a waveguide.
|
