[Also in Division B3] - A method of electric arc spray transfer welding comprises applying a pulsating unidirectional current to a coil arranged with its axis parallel to the welding arc to focus the arc and control the transfer rate of weld metal to the weld. An argon or CO 2 shielded arc welding apparatus comprises a consumable wire electrode 10 surrounded by the coil 15 which may be wound on an iron tube. The frequency, magnitude and mark/space ratio of the coil current are adjustable. The arc current may comprise pulses of the same frequency as that of the coil current superimposed on a D.C. current less than that required for welding to take place.</p> |
