Phenolic compounds are prepared by reacting an aromatic compound containing at least one nuclear hydrogen atom with anhydrous hydrogen peroxide in the presence of boric acid, boric anhydride or a borate ester and subsequently hydrolysing or alcoholysing the product to liberate the phenolic compound. The process may be applied to unsubstituted monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, diphenyl or naphthalene or to compounds having nuclear and/or side chain substituents, e.g. halogen atoms, ether groups or hydroxyl groups which are protected as borate esters. The product which is hydrolysed or alcoholysed is at least partially present as the corresponding borate ester. Examples are given of the preparation of methoxy-phenols, ethoxyphenols, dimethoxyphenols, cresols and xylenols. |
