<p>A process step in the manufacture of an ecteinascidin compound comprising deprotecting a compound of formula (A) by removing both protecting groups in a single step to give an alpha aminolactone of formula (35), wherein ProtNH is an amino protecting group and ProtOH is a hydroxy protecting group. Further process steps include oxidizing the alpha aminolactone of formula (35) to a corresponding alpha ketolactone by transamination.
