The present invention relates to methods for securing a distributor plate 314, 328 to a backing plate 312, 326 of a chromatography column 300 without the need for releasable fixing means such as screws or bolts and to chromatographic columns utilizing such methods. To affix the distributor to the backing plate a negative pressure or vacuum is generated internally within the column, i.e. without the requirement for an external pump or similar device. Where the column comprises a base assembly 310 and an adapter assembly 320 the vacuum can be generated in an air pocket 313, 323 between the distributor and backing plates by the relative movement of the two assemblies. The column tube 306 itself may also be secured to the distributor plate by means of an internally generated vacuum. Ribbing and locating means may provide strength and aid in accurate positioning. |
