A gas-phase catalytic reactor for exothermic reactions comprises within a common shell a heat exchanger above which is in succession, a plurality of catalyst beds fed in parallel by a corresponding number of gas streams from the heat exchanger. In Fig. 5, the gas mixture enters external shell 10' at 12' and passes down the space between 10' and inner shell 30' before entering heat exchanger 25' at the bottom. From heat-exchanger 25', which is divided into two by partition 26', the gas mixture passes by duct 36' to the top of catalyst bed 68 and by duct 38' to the top of catalyst bed 14. Into these beds quenching gases may be passed by ducts 130- 133. Reacted gases leave the catalyst beds by the bottom and pass by header 84' to the pipes by which they are conveyed through heat exchanger 26' to header 86' and exit 64'. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), further heat exchange is provided for by passing the incoming gas mixture in ducts up through the catalyst beds before reaction, and conducting cooling gases into the top of the heat exchanger instead of directly into the catalyst beds. The reactor may be employed for ammonia synthesis at 400-600‹C.
