A bottle labelling machine (Fig. 1) comprises a rotary feed member 5 bearing presser heads 21, Fig. 9, a suction operated label delivery drum 7 which rotates the bottles 3 for applying body labels, means for depressing the presser heads and neck-label applying means. The rotary delivery drum 7 receives front and back labels from known label presenting means, Fig. 6, and applies them to bottles 3 pressed between the drum 7 and a pressure member 12 said bottles being rotated by the drum. The bottles are fed from a belt 2 to the presser heads located above a table 15 rotating with the feed member 5 by a star-shaped wheel 4 and are taken off by a rotating table 6 or the table 15 can be replaced by a belt adapted to follow the circular path traversed by the bottles. Neck label applying means.-In one embodiment, Fig. 4, gummed labels C are removed from supports 40 by a rotary suction arm 30 and applied to a pair of flaps 33 situated in the path of the bottle 3 either before or after the rotary drum 7. The flaps are pivoted vertically at 34 and horizontally at 35 so that the flaps twist to press the label around the bottle neck as the bottle passes through the flaps. Fig. 9 illustrates two sets of flaps 33, 38 for applying a front body label and a neck label simultaneously the back body label being applied by drum 7. In a further embodiment, Fig. 19, labels are applied to a suction arm 30B attached to arm 75 engaging on bar 76. At the termination of bar 76 spring means on suction arm 30B cause the arm to rotate to apply a neck label to a bottle 3. When the bar 76 commences the arm 75 causes the suction arm 30B to be removed from the bottle 3 before the body labels are applied. In both embodiments brushes 37 serve to complete the pressing of the label. Tag strap labelling means may also be associated with the neck labelling means. Presser arms.-In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the presser arms are spring loaded downwardly and co-operate with table 15 rotating with the feed member 5 and are released from the bottles when a cam lever engages a cam rail (Fig. 11, not shown). In a further embodiment, in which neck labels are applied after the body labels, the presser arms are spring loaded upwardly and co-operate with individually rotating turntables (Fig. 17). The presser arms are held in position by a cam rail and are arranged to rotate the bottles before they reach the delivery drum 7. A clutch is released to stop rotation after the body labels have been applied and after the bottles have been rotated a sufficient amount to allow neck labels to be applied in a position corresponding to the body labels. |
