Yttrium oxide is added to uranium oxide to form a ceramic nuclear fuel which does not exhibit columnar grain growth when subjected to a severe temperature gradient at a temperature up to 2000 DEG C. The proportion of Y2O3 in the ceramic may be 0.5 to 5% by weight. Powdered UO2 and Y2O3 may be mixed together or a solution of an yttrium compound may be added to UO2 powder, the slurry dried, and the yttrium compound converted to oxide. The mixed powder is die-cast, slip-cast, or extruded, and then sintered in hydrogen, argon or steam. The uranium in the UO2 may be enriched in U 235.
|
