Labels are transferred from a web 28<SP>11</SP> (Fig. 1) to an article 52 by holding the web and label in contact with the article and applying heat and pressure. There is then preferably a delay before the web is withdrawn from the article. In the form illustrated the web is tensioned by a spring- biased roller 34 and is intermittently drawn into engagement with the article 52 by a roller 60 on an oscillating arm 56. Heat and pressure are then applied by a roller 82 reciprocated by a ram 66 and operable either on both the forward and return strokes or on one of these only. An auxiliary spring-biased roller (285) (Fig. 6, not shown) may apply further pressure. Alternatively pressure may be applied to the label by a flexible shoe (387) (Fig. 4, not shown) and heat subsequently applied by a member (382). In a further alternative the heater (482) (Fig. 5, not shown) and the flexible surface may be combined. Instead of the label web being moved into engagement with the article, as in Fig. 1, the article may move to engage the web. Each label on the web (12) (Fig. 7, not shown) may consist of a layer of wax (14), a layer of varnish (18), an ink layer (20) and a heat-activated adhesive layer (22). |
