Nutritionally and medicinally valuable materials are extracted from pollen by treating with a mixture of water and a water-miscible organic solvent, digesting the mixture of extract and pollen grains with a mould of the genus Mucor, and removing the mould and pollen to leave the required extract. The preferred solvent is acetone, or may be ethanol. After separating the pollen grains, they may be defatted with acetone or ethyl ether, further digested with the Mucor remaining on the pollen and re-extracted with the water-solvent mixture to give a further yield of the required extract. The digestion process is said to break down allergenically active and undesirable proteinaceous components to harmless lower molecular weight products. The pollen extracts are useful as a source of amino acids, vitamins and deoxyribosides; the pollen used in the Examples is obtained from Phleum pratense (Timothy grass), and the mould is Mucor hiemalis. |
