A device 20 for use in providing a surface with a layer 22 of material comprises a substrate 24 having the layer of material bonded to one side. The device may be fitted to the surface by preparing it e.g. cleaning with alcohol and sanding, and then bonding the side of the substrate remote from the layer of material to the surface. The substrate may be metal, aluminium, wood, GRP or fiber-glass substrate, the layer being wood veneer, cloth laminate or paint bonded to the substrate using pure bond spray adhesive. The layer of material may be 500-900 micrometers (0.5-0.9mm) thick. The substrate may be 900 micrometers (0.9mm) thick. The device may be shaped to conform to the shape of the surface and may be used on a commercial surface such as a bank counter or reception desk
