Compressible units having drainage channels to slow down and stop aircraft at the end of runways

A vehicle arresting unit, suitable for placement at the end of a runway is disclosed. The unit including a block (12) of compressible material having top, bottom and side surfaces. An intermediate material, having a resiliency characteristic, is positioned above the top surface of the block. A cap assembly (20) is positioned above the intermediate material and includes a top tray of frangible material and edge portions extending downward from the top portion. The cap also has tray extensions extending from edge portions of said top tray. The top tray is fabricated to readily break during arrestment of the vehicle. Under the block is a bottom tray (30) of water impervious material which has edge portions extending upward from the bottom portion. The bottom tray is configured to impede entry of ground surface moisture. The bottom tray also includes a lower surface bordered by bevelled edges which form water drainage channels when two of said vehicle arresting units are positioned side-by-side on a supporting surface.
