Disclosed is a composition prepared by: (a) the chemical reaction of polyethylene glycol and maleic anhydride, resulting in the substantially complete esterification of the terminal hydroxyl groups of the polyethylene glycol by the maleic anhydride; followed by (b) chemical reaction of the product of step (a) with a dithiol.
