摘要 <p>A hinge assembly for eyeglasses having a pair of mutually perpendicular folding or pivot axes to permit movement about each axis for each respective temple arm and lens support assembly. A cam member is interposed between the temple and lens frame, with a flange directed towards the lens frame, a first pin extending between said lens support assembly and said flange to pivotally connect said lens support assembly and said flange to define a first axis of rotation, a first cam surface on the flange, a first cam follower engaged with said first cam surface, and a first spring biasing element acting between the first cam follower and the lens frame to oppose relative movement between the temple and the lens frame about the first pivot axis from a predetermined position; said cam member further having a tongue directed toward the temple, a second pin extending between the temple and the tongue to pivotally connect the temple and the tongue to define a second pivot axis orthogonal to said first pivot axis, a second cam surface on the tongue, a second cam follower engaged with the second cam surface, and a second spring biasing element acting between the second cam follower and the temple to oppose relative movement between said temple and said lens support structure about said second pivot axis from said predetermined position. The predetermined position is centrally located between the ranges of movement about each respective axis. The cam surfaces are shaped to return the temple to the central location. A central portion of the cam surfaces is at a minimum radius from the pivot axis and the radial spacing of the surface from the pivot axis progressively increases in radius to either side of said central portion. The cam followers are slidably mounted within the temples and lens frame. The bias springs are connected to an extension of the cam followers. The temples can be folded to a closed position and retained in that position by the cam followers acting upon the cam surfaces.</p>
