The tensioner has a pyrotechnic drive unit moving a transmission element (20) to drive a rotatable stored pinion (14) by drive unit induced force. A burst safeguard decreases overpressure that arises during activation of the drive unit. The burst safeguard comprises a deformation element, and occupies the transmission element on the pinion in a deformed state when rotation of the pinion is prevented. The deformation element is arranged such that the deformation element moves at the pinion by the force transmission element in the deformed state. An independent claim is also included for a method for degradation of an overpressure in a pyrotechnic propelled belt tensioner.
