<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a constitution in an image forming apparatus at low cost, which is applicable to a detection part of a device performing a detection in short time, requires no dedicated signal line and distinguishes a kind of substrates. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises a DC controller 201 having a MPU207 and a high voltage power supply device 202 controlled by a signal from the MPU207, and is capable of distinguishing a kind of the high voltage power supply device 202 when the power supply is started. The image forming apparatus also comprises a photointerrupter 436 which outputs a detection signal after detecting the existence or non-existence of a record sheet 35, and a signal line for transmitting the detection signal output from the photointerrupter 436 from the high voltage power supply device 202 to the MPU207.
