A method and an apparatus for automatic restoration of an image (1) or a sequence of images (1), e.g. motion picture films, are disclosed, which facilitate removal of artifacts (2, 4, 50, 51) within the image (1) or the sequence of images (1). The restoration is split into a detection process (20) and a removal process (21). In the detection process (20) artifacts (2, 4, 50, 51) in the image (1) or the sequence of images (1) are detected and information about the detected artifacts (2, 4, 50, 51) is stored in a metadata database (15). In the subsequent removal process (21) one or more of the detected artifacts (2, 4, 50) are removed from the image (1) or the sequence of images (1) based on the information stored in the metadata database (15).
