<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology which lets the user know whether a notification that image data has been confirmed will be made from a receiving side, thereby solving the problem in conventional systems that, although a notification that image data has been confirmed was requested, if a FAX unit on the receiving side could not notify a transmitting device that the image data has been confirmed, it was unknown whether the notification that the image data has been confirmed is made from the receiving side. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU 101 closes a circuit (S101), receives notification of the standard capability of a FAX unit 1 on the receiving side and notification of letter opening confirmation capability (S102), and executes a process for setting letter opening confirmation (S103). In S103, determination is made whether to transmit the set content of letter opening confirmation to the FAX unit 1 on the receiving side (S104) and, if the set content of letter opening confirmation is found to be transmitted to the FAX unit 1 on the receiving side (YES in S104), the set content of letter opening confirmation is transmitted to the FAX unit 1 on the receiving side (S105).
