<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect touchdown of a magnetic head even on the intermediate periphery of a magnetic disk. <P>SOLUTION: According to an embodiment, there is provided a touchdown detect method in a magnetic disk drive for detecting the contact of a magnetic head to a magnetic disk by changing the flying height of the magnetic head. The touchdown detect method changes the control of a spindle motor rotating the magnetic disk from feed back control to open loop control, detects a change in rotational speed of the magnetic disk during the period of the open loop control, and detects the contact of the magnetic head to the magnetic disk based on the detected change in rotational speed. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
