The invention relates to the coke chemical industry, and specifically to the technology for producing metallurgical coke from a charge comprising petroleum processing products with an increased sulfur content. The technical result achieved by the proposed invention consists in the partial or complete neutralization of the harmful effect of sulfur when coking a material having an increased sulfur content, which makes it possible to extend the field of use of the claimed process in comparison with known processes. The technical result is achieved in that the process for neutralizing the effect of sulfur in the production of coke components from carbon-containing raw materials comprising heavy sulfur waste materials from petroleum processing comprises introducing a reagent, namely an oxide of an alkaline earth metal or a carbonate of an alkaline earth metal or a hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal, preheating the carbon-containing raw material to a temperature of 150-500°?, then performing coking, wherein the amount of reagent is 0.1-1.7 % for each percentage content of sulfur in the heavy waste materials from petroleum processing.
