Phenol is alkylated in the 2- and 2,6-positions by reaction at above 280 DEG C. with an alcohol or ether in presence of a fixed bed of catalyst comprising an amphoteric metal oxide. In examples, o-cresol and 2,6-xylenol are prepared using MeOH or Me2O and an Al2O3 catalyst.
