<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus providing an excellent image by making a connection stripe inconspicuous even if a landing position is deviated between recording element sequences when using a recording head made longer in length due to connection configuration, and to provide a method for controlling the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In a recording means, a plurality of recording element sequences are arranged in an arranging direction such that recording elements located at their ends are superposed on each other in the arranging direction. A landing position deviation direction holding means holds a direction of relative landing position deviation between two dots recorded by the recording elements included in two recording element sequences different from each other out of the plurality of recording element sequences. An image recording means records an image while switching the recording element sequences including the recording elements used to record the image from one to the other of the two recording element sequences in an area where the recording elements are superposed on each other.
