Apparatus for honing a bore 70, Fig. 1, includes a reciprocating tool 10 and a gauge 87 which enters the bore under the action of means interposed between it and the tool when the bore has reached its final size, and means for discontinuing reciprocation of the tool in response to the movement of the gauge. The tool includes a head 11 carrying abrading elements 16 mounted in shoes 22 which are held in contact with cones 20, 21 by garter springs 24. The cones are connected by rods 44, 45, Fig. 2, to a piston 43 which under control of a valve 59 may be caused to displace the cones axially to contract or expand the elements 16. The cylinder for the piston 43 is formed in one end of a spindle 36 connected to a driving member 80, Fig. 5, which is reciprocated by a piston 74 under control of a four-way valve 77 and rotated by a slidably splined gear 79 driven from an electric motor 77'. The valves 59 and 77 are operated by solenoids forming part of a circuit which also includes the switch for the motor 77' and a microswitch having an arm 89<SP>1</SP> operated by the movement of the gauge into the bore to stop the machine and collapse the abrading elements. To allow for misalignment of the head 11 with respect to the member 80, the drive is transmitted through intermediate members 13, 25, having a spherical seat formed between their abutting ends and connected rotationally and axially by slots 27, pins 26 and a sleeve 29, while the rods 44, 45 are connected by a pivot pin 47 which also passes into slots 48 in the member 13. The gauge 87 has three radially-ended lugs corresponding to the final size of the bore and bolted to similar lugs on a housing 86 rotatably mounted on bearings 88, 89 on the member 25 and connected by arms 85' to a ring 87<SP>1</SP> which operates the switch arm 89<SP>1</SP>. In a modified form of gauge, the gauging surfaces are formed by three radially-adjustable micrometer screws. The gauge may have a chamfer 99 to pilot it into the bore and is pressed into contact with the latter by a coil spring 96.
