The system has a set of similar spherical storage elements (20) arranged in a receiving space (14) and comprising a wall that encloses an inner space fillable with gaseous fuel. A pressure regulating valve is arranged in the wall of the receiving space for opening and closing a fluid connection between the inner space and the outer space surrounding the storage element. The pressure regulating valve produces an outflow of the gaseous fuel from the storage element, if the external pressure acting on the receiving space is less than the preset maximum external pressure. The wall of the storage elements is made of fiber reinforced plastic material or metallic material such as steel.
