A light source unit according to the present invention is provided with: an LED (1) comprising a light-emitting surface; and a polarizer (2) provided at a position opposite the light-emitting surface of the LED (1) and wherein the direction of the transmission axis changes according to the in-plane position. The polarizer (2) has a concave-convex structure in which, of the light incident from the LED (1) side, light having a polarization direction that is parallel to the transmission axis is transmitted, and light having a polarization direction that is orthogonal to the transmission axis is reflected and diffracted. The concave-convex structure includes a diffraction grating (3).
