A protection device for an insulator column comprises at least two voltage distribution rings, a head ring arranged at the upper portion of the column and a smaller diameter ring near the base fitting of the head element of the column. As shown in Fig. 1, a 700 kV column comprises five ceramic elements 1, connected by fittings 2, and head element 3 has a voltage distributing ring 4 fixed to the upper fitting 5, and a lower ring 6 of smaller diameter fixed to the base fitting of the head element. In other arrangements (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) two smaller diameter rings are used, one on either side of the base fitting of the head element, or a single small diameter ring below the base fitting. |
