The present invention relates to a method for franking and handling a mail piece as well as to the franked mail piece as such. The method comprises franking of a mail piece with a franking code transmitted by a service provider to a communication device of a customer. The franking code, which comprises a plurality of symbols, includes a first and a second part, where the first part represents a franking value whereas the second part is a unique identifier. The franked mail piece is handled in a mail handling machine for carrying out a database-independent determination of the franking value.
