In pivot joints, particularly for use in motor vehicle steering linkages, of the type comprising a joint casing closed at one end by a casing closure and carrying a bearing element with a joint pin, the pin and casing are of shaped but un-machined metal and the casing closure and bearing element are of plastics material. In Fig. 1, showing a joint providing both rotational and angular movement of the pin relative to the casing, the metal joint pin 2 has a shank passing through a bore in the segmental spherical, plastics bearing element 3, the element bearing against the similarly shaped inner wall of the metal casing 1. The pin has an enlarged head, with a shoulder 4 bearing against the upper face of the bearing element, and with a central elevation 5 bearing against the inner face of the plastics casing closure 6. Fig. 2 shows a joint having parts similar to those in Fig. 1 except that the inner wall of the casing 1 and the bearing element 8 are of truncated conical shape, the joint thus providing only for rotational movement of the pin about its axis. The joints are provided with seals, 7 and 10 respectively. The bearing ele- ments may be formed of acetal resin, preferably having incorporated a lubricant (e.g. graphite), or of polyurethane, and the casing closure may be made of acetal resin, the metal parts are preferably formed from steel, e.g. by forging. |
