Modular switch network nodes for a communication network

The modular switch network node (100) has a switching network node base unit (110) and port modules (170,190). The port modules are connected to communications network through connection interface (178,179,198). The incoming communication data is transmitted to connection interfaces. A switching node base unit is provided with port modules (170,190) that are replaced with functional modules (180,190), so that functionality of the switching-network node is extended. An independent claim is included for functional module.
