Disclosed is a method of estimating fuel leakage into oil in an internal combustion engine 110 equipped with a high pressure fuel pump 180 integrated into the engine 110 for pumping fuel to a fuel rail 170. The method comprises the steps of setting a starting value Qpmp of a parameter indicative of a fuel leakage into oil, determining a variation â Qpmp of this parameter as a function of an engine speed value Espeed and of a fuel rail pressure value PRail, correcting the variation Qpmp with a correction factor CFFQ,CFFT,CFmD,CFAGE to obtain a corrected variation value LQ*pmp, adding the corrected variation value Q*pmp to the starting value Qpmp to obtain an estimated value Q*pmp of the fuel leakage into oil and repeating the preceding steps setting as a starting value the estimated value Q*pmp. If the amount of fuel leaking in to the oil is larger than a reference value then a fuel leak warning light is lit. An engine control unit, automotive system and computer program for carrying out the method are also disclosed.
