A large diesel IC engine, e.g. for marine applications, has a cooling duct (23) around the top of the cylinder sleeve (22) and the adjacent part of the cylinder head to provide a cooling jacket as well as an air duct for starter air flow. No separate ducts are required, nor any costly castings. A coupling element (27) is fitted to each cylinder to connect to the ducts for inlet and outlet cooling water and for inlet starter air.
