LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY AND GLOBAL DIMMING CONTROL METHOD OF THEREOF

PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and a global dimming control method thereof are provided to significantly increase color visibility and purity in a color image with a low average picture level(APL) by controlling brightness of a backlight with a dimming value bigger than the dimming value corresponding to an APL of a displayed image. CONSTITUTION: An APL(Average Picture Level) of a displayed image is calculated(S20). The APL is a first critical value or less(S30). The number of pixels of a chromatic color region included in the displayed image(S40). The number of pixels of the chromatic color region is compared with a second critical value(S50). The number of pixels of the chromatic color region is greater than the second critical value. A gain value of the chromatic color region is calculated(S60). A dimming control signal is calculated by multiplying the APL and the gain value(S70). The brightness of a backlight is controlled with the dimming value.
