PURPOSE: A washing machine and a control method thereof are provided to sense laundry quantity according to a change of the weight of an external tank, thereby drastically increasing accuracy of sensing the laundry quantity. CONSTITUTION: Washing water is put in an external tank(2). An internal tank(3) receives laundry quantity. The internal tank can rotate in the external tank. An external tank support unit suspends the external tank in a casing. A deformation sensing unit senses a strain value by the weight of the external tank. A control unit(11) determines the laundry quantity according to a change of the sensed strain value.
