<PICT:1111386/C2/1> Apparatus for filtering slurries or for chemical contacting of liquids or slurries with gases, for example glucose solution with hydrogen and sodium phenate with CO2, both carried out at 250 DEG C. and 250 p.s.i., comprises a generally annular chamber formed between a rotatable worm member and a barrel in which it is coaxially mounted, the worm and barrel having respective helical threads of opposite hand, whose radial depths vary in opposite directions, and additional helical grooves, in the crowns of the threads, being covered by porous metal, ceramic or plastics strips through which filtrate is removed or gas supplied as the slurry or liquid is moved axially of the chamber by the rotating worm. In Fig. 4, liquid or slurry enters by inlet 124 and, as worm 110 rotates, is progressively passed from groove 118 to groove 122 in barrel 120, while gas supplied to passage 104 passes from jets 108 through porous strips 109 into the reaction space, the reaction product being discharged through outlet 126. Heating and cooling means 136, 138 may embrace different sections of the barrel. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 842,692. |
