[Also in Division D1] A washing machine has an agitator and a spin tub with associated drums 70, 68 which are alternatively drivable through friction rollers 72, 76 one friction roller being so urged into contact with the drive member that when it is rotated in one direction the roller is urged into contact with its associated drum and when the drive member is rotated in the other direction the roller is retracted. Roller drive mechanism 51 is suspended from shaft housing 54, connected to a resilent cup-shaped support mounted in the base of the water container and enclosing coaxial spin and agitate shafts 55, 57. Mechanism 51 comprises a four pole reversible motor 60, with an automatic reset type thermal load protector, whose shaft 62 has a spin drive portion 64 and a reduced diameter agitate drive portion 66 keyed thereto. Drive portions 64, 66 drive spin wheel assembly 68 and agitate drum 70 through self-energizing rollers 76, 72 so that rotation of the motor in one direction drives the agitate drum and in the other direction drives the spin wheel assembly 68. To avoid wear on roller 76 during agitation, a retractor assembly 80 is provided wherein roller 76 comprises a polyurethane tyre 81 moulded on to a die-cast aluminium insert 83 with a sintered bronze hub 85 whose ends 98, 102 engage sockets 96, 100 in arms 92, 94 sandwiched between the arms 86, 88 of a bracket 84. Arms 86, 88 are held apart by a spacer sleeve 90 coaxial with and of smaller diameter than hub 85 and sockets 96, 100 so that roller 76 can shift in all directions round sleeve 90. Between the other ends of arms 92, 94 is a retractor roller 104 with a bearing sleeve 105 journalled on a shaft 106 which extends through slots 108, 110 and 114, 116 in arms 86, 88 and 92, 94 respectively. A leaf spring 120 has ends engaging grooves 119, 121 in the ends of shaft 106 to bias roller 104 against roller 76 and the hub 85 of roller 76 against spacer 90. A leafspring 130 inside bracket 84 engages the inner ends of arms 92, 94 to assist spring 120. During standstill, roller 76 engages driver 64 and wheel 68 but during agitation the roller 104 tends to cause the spin roller to drive between the retractor roller 104 and the spin drive 64 away from spin wheel assembly 68. Bosses 150, 152 on arms 92, 94 extend through slots 108, 110 to form pivots. Assembly 80 is attached to the motor frame by a bolt 136 extending through sleeve 90. The roller 72 may be similarly mounted.
