In apparatus for coating web material e.g. paper, the coating material is supplied to the nip between a backing roll 11 and a counterrotating applicator roll 13 by means of a nozzle 18. A doctor blade 41 is positioned adjacent the roll 13 to remove excess coating material therefrom, and a further doctor 41, which may be a flexible blade or air knife, may be positioned adjacent the web on the opposite side of the nip to the nozzle. The excess coating material is preferably collected, cleaned, and returned to the nozzle 18. The nozzle 18 comprises a coating material receiving chamber communicating with an outlet 23 which is provided with adjustable end members for varying the coating width. The end members are preferably curved to deflect excess coating material at the ends of the outlet towards the applicator roll. The nozzle position may be adjustable in relation to the nip. |
