Disclosed is the PRO2 or PRO3 gene of Pichia pastoris. The locus is useful sites for stable integration of heterologous nucleic acid molecules into the Pichia pastoris genome. The gene or gene fragments encoding the Pro2p or Pro3p may be used as a selection marker for constructing recombinant Pichia pastoris.
