<p>Provided is an engine equipped with a supercharger (exhaust turbocharger) which is rotationally driven by means of exhaust gas and for which the expansion ratio can be set greater than the compression ratio. The engine also is equipped with: an operating state determination means that determines the operating state of the engine; multiple exhaust valves provided with respect to one air cylinder; a variable exhaust valve timing mechanism capable of changing the valve-open period for a least one of the aforementioned multiple exhaust valves; and a control unit which, when it is determined by the aforementioned operating state determination means that the engine is operating with a light load acceleration is occurring, issues a command to the aforementioned variable exhaust valve timing mechanism so as to make the valve-open period for the aforementioned one exhaust valve occur at a more advanced angle than the valve-open period for the other exhaust valves, thus maintaining the supercharging response and the expansion ratio.</p> |
