The method involves simulating a released accelerator pedal from an operating point characterized by a predetermined engine speed and a boost pressure of a compressor (8). The rate of reduction of engine speed is modulated, where the simulation and modulation are repeated multiple times by changing the operating point and the rate of reduction of engine speed. A number of characteristic points of the dynamic pumping of the compressor are determined from the simulation and modulation. An independent claim is also included for an installation for characterizing the dynamic pumping of a compressor of an internal combustion engine, comprising a test bench.
