PURPOSE: A data storage system including a multi-bit memory device and an operating method thereof are provided to minimize a buffer size of a memory controller by not retaining data in a buffer memory. CONSTITUTION: Data inputted according to external request is stored in a buffer memory(S210). It is determined whether data stored in the buffer memory is data for a buffer program operation about a memory cell array(S220). When a main program operation about the memory cell array is requested, a pattern of a main program operation about the memory cell array is determined(S250). A set of commands for a main program operation about the memory cell array are outputted to a multi-bit memory device based on the determined pattern(S260).
