<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that accurately detects the toner adhesion amount on a sheet and maintains good tone reproduction characteristics on a sheet, irrespective of the types of sheets to be used. <P>SOLUTION: Test patches (tone patches) having different tone characteristics are formed on a photoreceptor, and each of the toner amount P is detected by a sensor. The formed test patches are again transferred to sheets, and each of the transfer residual toner amount D is detected by a sensor. The toner amount before transfer and the transfer residual toner amount of respective tone patches are compared, and each of the toner residual amount on a sheet is determined.
