A compost is produced by mixing sphagnum moss peat with chemical fertilizer, adjusting the water content to at least 60%, and adjusting the pH to a value in the range of 5.5-7.0. The peat used is obtained from the top four feet of a bog, contains 30-50% of hard humidified components, and is milled to less than 3/8 inch. Fertilizers specified are potassium nitrate, sulphate and phosphate; ammonium nitrate, sulphate and dihydrogenphosphate; triple superphosphate; hoof and horn meal and dried blood; ureaformaldehyde; ferrous sulphate, copper sulphate, and sodium molybdate. The pH may be adjusted by adding limestone containing 25% of magnesium carbonate. The compost may contain 10-10,000 p.p.m. of N, 50-20,000 p.p.m. of K2O, and 30-10,000 p.p.m. of P2O5.
