<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid a situation where an opening formed in a housing for mounting an optical element in it or removing it from there is opened while a light source is on or a cooling fan is operating. <P>SOLUTION: The image projector projects light from a light source 1 to a target projection surface via an optical element 41 and a projection lens 5. The device comprises: housings 21 and 22 accommodating the light source, the optical element, and the projection lens and having a light source opening 21c in which the light source is mounted or from which it is removed, and an optical element opening 22a in which the optical element is mounted and from which it is removed; a light source cover 28 attached to the housings and configured to open or close the light source opening; a housing cover 36 attached to the housing so as to be detached and covering the optical element opening; a detector 40 configured to detect the opening/closing of the light source cover; and a controller 50 configured to turn off the light source according to the detection of the opening of the light source cover by the detector while the light source is on.
