[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for making a number of small rolls 16, Fig. 1, from a supply roll 10 of sheet material, comprises a support roller 14 over which the web 11 passes, with means 23 for lifting a transverse strip of the web from the roller 14 and applying adhesive to the strip, and with means whereby during further movement of the web the adhesive strip is moved further outwardly from the roller 14 into contact with a rotating core on a mandrel 15 at a pick-up position 19, at which position a knife 24, Fig. 15, severs the web in advance of the strip. Cores are carried by mandrels 15 on a rotary carrier 18 which is indexed to move one core to a winding position 20 and a succeeding core to the pick-up position 19. The adhesive-applying device (see Division D1) comprises a plate 22 vertically-reciprocating in an adhesive container 21 so that during its downward movement its bottom edge picks up a metered amount of adhesive which may be transferred either directly to the web or indirectly through a roller with a radial protuberance (Fig. 7). Fixed to a shaft 67 situated within the roller 14 are arms 66 carrying the knife 24 and a resilient web-support member 23. At the requisite time, the shaft 67 is caused by a spring 78 to rotate so as to move the support 23 outwardly to a position where the strip of web on the support picks up adhesive from the plate 22. In this position of the shaft 67, the knife edge is level with the periphery of roller 14. As the web continues to move forward, the outward movement of the support 23 and knife 24 continues until at the pick-up position 19, the support 23 presses the adhesive strip against a core and the knife 24 severs the web in advance of the strip. To operate the shaft 67, an arm 70, Fig. 15, attached to the shaft carries a hooked part 80 normally engaged by a spring-urged latch 79 mounted on the end of the roller 14 so as to hold the support 23 and knife 24 within the surface of the roll. When a new roll 16 is to be started, an electromagnet is energized to move a dog 86 axially into the path of the latch 79 so that during the rotation of the roll, the latch is moved away from the hook 80. Movement of the shaft 67 under the action of spring 78 is now controlled by the engagement of a follower 73 with a fixed cam 76 so as to effect the movements of the support 23 and knife 24 as already described.</p>
