<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of improving contrast performance while minimizing the reduction in brightness by shielding a light beam which reduces contrast with diaphragms provided on both an illumination optical system and a projection lens. <P>SOLUTION: An illumination optical system is composed of a light source part 1 and 2, a first lens array 4, a second lens array 5, and a superposition lens 7. An illumination diaphragm 8 is disposed near the second lens array 5. The illumination diaphragm 8 becomes a rectangular-shaped opening when being closed, and a side of the rectangular-shaped opening is perpendicular to or parallel to a lens cell of the second lens array 5 in its longitudinal direction. A liquid crystal display element 17 modulates incident light, and a projection lens 19 enlarges and projects the modulated light. A projection lens diaphragm 20 becomes a diamond-shaped opening when being closed, and a diagonal line of the diamond-shaped opening is perpendicular to or parallel to a side direction of a lens cell of a pupil image of the second lens array 5, which is formed at a pupil position of the projection lens. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
