<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine in which an air-fuel mixture and an EGR gas are independently stratified in a broad load region. <P>SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine, a first partition 68a dividing the inside of a first intake port 26 into a first inside passage 26a and a first outside passage 26b and a second partition 68b dividing the inside of a second intake port 28 into a second inside passage 28a and a second outside passage 28b are provided. A first fuel injection valve 30a injecting fuel into the first inside passage 26a and a second fuel injection valve 30b injecting the fuel into the second inside passage 28a are provided. A first EGR passage 42a connected to the first outside passage 26b and a second EGR passage 42b connected to the second outside passage 28b are provided.
