PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous secondary battery having a high capacity and showing excellent input-output characteristics even under low temperatures, and a method for manufacturing the material comprising only a small number of steps to achieve stable, efficient, and low-cost manufacture.

SOLUTION: A composition made of a compound (B) containing a group-13 element of the periodic table and a water-soluble high polymer (C) is attached to a carbon material (A) capable of intercalating and releasing lithium ions.
